About

HI! My Name Is Lonnie.

me1I’m the Roller Skating addict that dreamed up the Skate For Diabetes. I’m on a mission to do a few things with this annual event.

  1. I want to be a part of ending Type 1 Diabetes. The only way to do that is funding research for a cure.
  2. Revive an interest in roller skating in the young and old alike.
  3. Spread this mission far and wide in the years to come!

You might be here because you have diabetes. Maybe you have a friend or family member with diabetes. Maybe you’re here because you love skating and Google dropped you here.

Maybe you wake up everyday and want to be part of something bigger than yourself.

Regardless of the reason you’re on this page right now, please let me say, thank you!

I want to inspire you to help me find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes! There’s so many ways to get involved!

We may not be the biggest fundraising event out there, but small efforts can lead to big changes. Research for the cure keeps pushing forward. It might be the last dollar we raise that makes the difference. All we can do is continue supporting the JDRF in their effort to find a cure.

Why Diabetes?

Diabetes doesn’t get the attention that cancer or heart disease receives from the media. That doesn’t mean diabetes is any less dangerous. Type 1 Diabetes claimed the life of a dear friend, cripples others, and makes navigating life tricky and even life threatening. It creates a lifelong dependence on injected insulin and a list of complications.

The simple truth is that Type 1 Diabetes can strike both children and adults. There is no prevention. There is no cure.

Straight from the JDRF:

People living with T1D and their families are quickly forced to adapt to a 24/7, unrelenting cycle of blood sugar level testing and insulin injections to manage the disease and stay alive. They must pay careful attention to diet, exercise, sleep, stress, and other factors that can upset the balance between dangerous blood sugar lows and highs. Despite careful management, the risks of long-term, life-threatening complications such as blindness, nerve damage, high blood pressure, stroke, and organ damage are a constant threat to those living with T1D.

Type 1 Diabetes by the numbers:

  • More than 3 million Americans battle Type 1 Diabetes.
  • 85% of those living with T1D are adults.
  • Roughly 30,000 people are diagnosed with T1D every year.
  • Healthcare costs associated with T1D are near $15 Million annually.

So, Why Skating?

Small-Logo.pngRoller skating is a great way to get fit and have fun at the same time! Why not?!

All the Diabetes fundraising events are usually walks and bike rides. I’m on a mission to insert roller skating as another option. Roller skating offers fun, family bonding, friendly competition, and awesome foot wear!

Let’s Help Find A Cure Together!

Nothing happens in a void. The biggest changes in the world are made possible by the actions of people coming together for a purpose. I’m inviting you, your friends, and your family to join me for a night of fun in the name of curing Type 1 Diabetes!
